Her Name on the Wall
Her name is written on the wall
No one hears her call
Her name is written on the wall
They tried to make her fall
She goes to sleep at night, divided in her heart
Her name is written in her blood, I can't read it no more
No one hears her call, no one hears her call
No one hears her call, no one hears her call
If I knew what her name was, she wouldn't be this mystery
Cause if I knew what her name was, I know she once was my city
Her name is written on the wall
I can't read it at all
Her name is written on the wall
They tried to make her fall
She tried to cross at night, all along the wall
And then the guns brought her down, no one saw her fall
No one saw her fall, no one hears her call
No one saw her fall, and no one hears her call
If I knew what her name was, she wouldn't be this mystery
Cause if I knew what her name was, I know she once was my city
If I knew what her name was, she wouldn't be this mystery
Cause if I knew what her name was, I know she once was my city
Oh, the wall falls, oh the wall falls, oh the wall falls on me
Oh, the wall falls, oh the wall falls, oh the wall falls on me
If I knew what her name was, she wouldn't be this mystery
Cause if I knew what her name was, I know she once was my city
Cause if I knew what her name was, she wouldn't be this mystery
Cause if I knew what her name was, I know she once was my Berlin
Oh, the wall falls, oh the wall falls, oh the wall falls on me
Oh, the wall falls, oh the wall falls, oh the wall falls on me
Oh, die Mauer, die Mauer, fliegen Sie!
Words and music by Peter Forrest
Year Written: 1984 (Peterborough, Ontario CANADA)
Date Recorded: 1986 (4-track, Montreal, Québec
CANADA)
Musicians: Peter Forrest (guitar and vocals), John McGrath
(bass), François Dubeau (drums)
Song Notes: This is one of the few songs Pete wrote at Trent
University. The song was inspired by Pete's German professor's
talk about the Berlin wall and how it was a bloody scar.
Pete was acquainted with the story of people trying to escape
from the East so he wrote this song with some German words at
the very end. The final German phrase means, "Oh, the
wall, the wall, fly away!" This song was definitely
written before its time.
This song was originally slow all the way through.
While running through the song for the first time for the first
gig in London, Ontario, Trent (the drummer) and John (bassist)
naturally sped up the song and that gave it a rocking edge.
Pete wasn't too thrilled at first, but he grew to love it after
a few plays. This song was part of the first Vee Gates Montreal
demo.
