Veronica Grace Charnley was born in Ottawa, Canada on March 6th, 1979. Even at an early age, she was photographed with her father as the singing baby for the local newspaper The Ottawa Citizen while singing from her stroller on Elgin Street in Ottawa. During her late teens, she took to guitar and voice lessons to continue her love of music. After graduating from high school, she decided to further her studies in music by attending the music program at Concordia University in Montreal. She completed her music degree while focusing on voice, composition and contemporary dance at Concordia University in Montreal in 2002. Her studies included classical music, jazz, American popular song (Tin Pan Alley) and Gregorian Chant that have all influenced her style of singing and songwriting. Her unique sound attracts attention in the folk/alternative scene wherever she plays. Her debut CD Deeper Still highlights all these influences. She has performed in Ottawa at Molly Maguires, The Elbow Room, Rasputins, Black Sheep Inn, and at "the oldest coffeehouse in Canada," The Yellow Door, in Montreal (video). She was also interviewed several times on the radio station 93.1 CKCU-FM. She has also made make waves on the worldwide web. Within one month of having her site on mp3.com, she was interviewed by The Women of Mp3.com, and shortly after by Girlmedia.com and her song Almost Touching has been in the top 10 folk charts at many times throughout the year. She writes her own songs, plays guitar and piano.
She has composed music and performed in a dance production for the Canada Dance Festival
2000 by Susie Burpee.
She has written some incidental music for the two fringe festivals plays: Something
Borrowed and GetAway that were in the Ottawa
and Montreal 2001/2002 Fringe Festivals. She has also appeared in short films by fine arts students at Concordia University. |
Veronica teamed up with a double bassist Gerg Horvath whom she met at a jazz open stage while both were performing jazz standards. She released a CD in October 2001 that was recorded at Distortion Studios, Ottawa. The CD is entitled Deeper Still and is a collection of Veronica's original folk/pop songs that mostly include voice, acoustic guitar, and the double bass. Other songs have diverse instruments such as the cello, a string quartet, drums, shakers, the East Indian percussion instrument the tabla, and even a classical triangle. She finished her music degree in May 2002 at Concordia University, Montreal. She is currently looking for artist management and/or a recording contract. She has also done film work as an extra, and minor roles for other short productions. She has received extensive training from the Cameron-Thor Studios. She acted in a short film called "Paid in Full." She has been playing shows in Montreal with the band Flotilla and received a Quebec grant to record their first album.
